The school owns the high-quality research platforms and strong scientific research strength. The school has been enrolled into the key construction projects such as the national "211" project, "985" project, as well as the "peak discipline plan" of Shandong University. So far the school owns the national-local joint engineering research center of "new-type energy with high efficient energy saving technology", the national-local joint engineering laboratory of "modern welding equipment”, the engineering research center of the ministry of education "power electronic energy saving technology and equipment”, the Shandong provincial key lab of “new-type energy and energy storage control”, Shandong provincial engineering center of “special environment robots and equipment”, as well as Shandong provincial college collaborative innovation center of “robots and intelligent equipment”.

In recent years, the school has undertaken more than 80 key research projects, including the Science Fund for Creative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Key Research and Development Program, The National Basic Research Program (973 Program), The National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), The National Key Technology R&D Program, and the Key Projects of NSFC. The school has won 5 national science and technology awards since 2008, including 3 National Natural Science Awards in Second-Ranking, 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award in First-Ranking, and 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award in Second-Ranking. The school has also won more than 40 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards so far. In addition, more than 3000 academic papers have been published including the ones published in the top journals such as IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and Automatica. There are also more than 40 books and textbooks have been published in recent years.
