Ceremony for Conferring Honorary Professorship of Shandong University on Professor Brian D.O. Anderson

On November 7th, Professor Brian D.O. Anderson, who is the international famous cybernetician, member of the Australian National Academy of Science and Engineering, was confered the Honorary Professor of Shandong University at the central campus. Professor Wang Qilong, who is the Executive vice President of Shandong University, issued a letter of appointment and delivered a speech. Before the ceremony, Professor Brian D.O. At the ceremony, Executive vice President Wang welcomed Brian D.O. Anderson to join. He introduced the history and current situation of the development of Shandong University, and introduced the university in talent cultivation, discipline construction, international exchanges and cooperation's achievements in recent years. He affirmed the strong development momentum and outstanding achievements of the control discipline, and believed Control School could have significantly inprovement with Professor Brian D.O. Anderson’s cooperation.

Professor Anderson recalled his visiting Shandong University experience since the 1980s and said he was deeply impressed by every visit, especially the recent visits.He highly agreed with Confucius' educational concept of "teaching without class", and spoke highly of the quality of talent training and the level of discipline development of Shandong University. He expressed his willingness to further strengthen substantive cooperation on the basis of previous cooperation to contribute to the construction of first-class control discipline of Shandong University.

During the speech, professor Anderson introduced in detail the development status of control engineering and various factors that promote the development of control engineering.He generally pointed out that the research needs, practical application needs, government and social needs of scholars in the field of control are the main driving forces for the development of control theory and practice in the new field. He expounds the important significance in today's complex environment to control development, summed up the new research direction in the field of control, think the problem of social public resources (including transportation, power supply, water supply, etc.), aging, health problems, economic problems, such as new application background, a new control theory should be include the traditional control theory, information theory and communication theory, and even cross discipline of many subjects such as computer science.

Representatives of outstanding scholars from the School of Control Science and Engineering and International Affairs Department Officers participated in relevant activities.

Professor BRIAN D.O. ANDERSON served as a member of a number of government bodies, including the Australian Science and Technology Council and the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. He is the distinguished professor of Australian National University, distinguished researcher of Australian National Institute of Information and Communication Technology, member of the Australian academy of sciences, member of the Australian academy of engineering, fellow of the Royal Society of UK, foreign member of American academy of engineering, IEEE Life Fellow and IFAC Fellow. At the American Control Conference in year 2016, Professor Anderson was granted the John r. Ragazzini distinguished education award from the AACC society, which was one of the very few award-winning scholars with major work experience outside the United States.
